BCIS Emerging Scholars Symposium - BCISESS 17’
The Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) organized its first ever Emerging Scholars’ Symposium on 12th October 2017.
Eighteen selected research papers were presented by young researchers under the main theme of “Global Transformation” .

The Inaugural Ceremony
Dr. Harinda Vidanage, Director, Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies delivered the opening remarks under the theme ‘Global Transformations’ while the Keynote Address was delivered by Dr. Chanaka Talpahewa, Head of Agency/ Country Programme Manager, UN Habitat- Sri Lanka. Mrs. Susan Jones, Political Secretary of the Australian High Commission also graced the Inaugural Ceremony.

First Session
In the first session of the Symposium, young researchers presented papers on Global Security Challenges, Environmental Governance and Justice and Rights in Transitions. This session included three parallel panels which were chaired by Mr. Nilanthan Niruthan, Security Analysis and BCIS Research Fellow, Mrs Menik Wakkumbura, Consultant, Head of Centre for Language Studies, Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration and Dr Maneesha Wanasinghe- Pasqual, Head, Department of International Relations, University of Colombo.
Second Session
At the second session of the symposium, researchers presented papers based on Foreign Policy Perspectives, Evolving Media Narratives and Sri Lanka and Emerging Asia. These three parallel panels were chaired by Dr. Harinda Vidanage, Director, BCIS, Mr. George Cooke, Assistant Director, East Asia and Pacific Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Chulani Attanayake, Research Director at the Institute of National Security Studies of Sri Lanka (INSSSL)

Certificate Awarding Ceremony
Certificates were awarded to the young researchers who presented their research at the BCIS ESS 17 by Dr. Harinda Vidanage, Director/BCIS, Dr. Mallika Karunaratne, Consultant/ BCIS, Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri and Ambassador(Rtd.) D. Casie Chetty. Mr. Shakthi De Silva received the Best Paper Award.

Post Conference Reception
The Post Conference Reception was held at the Saffron Committee Room, BMICH to appreciate the efforts of the researchers. Ms Susan Jones, Political Secretary of the Australian High Commission also graced the Reception.
